Joan Baez
Artist and peace
activist Joan Baez was born in Staten Island, near the setting position of
her Secondary Neptune. Her birthplace was also along the edge of a Transcendental
Midpoint-Field, extending from her Secondary Neptune, which curves over eastern
New York State, to her Primary Venus, which runs in a vertical, Midheaven
line west of New York State, thus framing the state and much of the northeastern
U.S.
As a child, Baez moved to
various locations throughout New York with her physicist father, whose research
and teaching assignments demanded frequent travel and relocation. After briefly
attending Boston University, in 1958 she discontinued her studies to instead
perform folk music in coffeehouses, clubs, and festivals. She received national
exposure the following year, at the Newport Folk Festival, another location
near the eastern edge of her Primary Venus / Secondary Neptune Transcendental
Midpoint-Field.
Her album Joan Baez (1960) marked the beginning of a successful recording career,
which included strong record sales in the early 1960s. Applying her “creative
imagination / and artistry” (Neptune / Venus) toward the goal of “peace” (Primary
Venus), she established the Institute for the Study of Nonviolence (1965)
and became active in protests against the Vietnam War, giving free performances
for various antiwar organizations and peace rallies. A self-acclaimed “Peace
Queen,” she was jailed twice for participating in “antiwar” (Venus) demonstrations.
In 1964, she refused to pay her taxes in protest of the federal funding of
the war. Influenced by the “pacifist views” (Venus) of her Quaker father,
Baez has made a lifelong commitment to “pacifism” and to channeling her “imagination
/ and creative talents” (Neptune / Venus) into music, promulgating “peaceful
coexistence, nonviolence, and mutual understanding” (Primary Venus).
