[Least-aspected Sun]

There are few art-historical subjects as rich in drama as that formed by Gauguin's influential paintings, tumultuous life, and sometimes-exhibitionistic writings.... He contributed substantially to the myth of the modern artist as self-centered ... renegade.
–Roberta Smith, “The Artist as Bully and Self-Described Sex Machine,” reviewing Paul Gauguin: An Erotic Life, by Nancy Mathews, New York Times (online), December 14, 2001.

Paul Gauguin

One of the most “celebrated” (Primary Sun) artists of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth centuries, Parisian Paul Gauguin was drawn to his Primary Transcendental when he sailed for Martinique in 1887: a location precisely under the vertical, midnight position of his Primary Sun. Gauguin later abandoned the pretenses of civilization and permanently relocated to this South Pacific locale, where Primary Sun runs almost precisely over Tahiti (17S37; 149W27) and the Marquesas Islands. He died on the island of Hiva Oa on May 8, 1903.
