[Least-aspected Neptune]

When allusions to mythology, art and religion are functioning at a high level of imaginative power ... they become images assisting the novel toward profound and unnerving ends. These ends are religious in impact ... Great mystics are invoked ... and Christ actually makes a personal appearance in one novel ... The goal is spiritual discernment; the enemy, debasement of the religious task. The fact that ultimate reality, even the cosmos itself, lies behind the drifting ... bourgeois surface is the vast secret of [her] best fiction ...
–Elizabeth Dipple, Iris Murdoch.

She spoke of the mesh of falsehoods that enter the mind of one who seeks the truth ...
–Lois M. Rodden, Profiles of Women.

Iris Murdoch

Iris Murdoch was born in Dublin in close proximity to Secondary Moon and in the midst of a Transcendental Midpoint-Field extending from her Moon, which sets over the east coast of Ireland, to Primary Neptune, which rises over the North Atlantic, several degrees west of Ireland.
Qualities traditionally associated with these symbols–“mysticism and spirituality; falsehoods and illusions ” (Neptune) and the force of the “personal emotions” (Moon)–reflect the major themes of her work. Her first novel, Under the Net (1954), focuses on the “falsehoods and illusions / generated by emotional entanglements in human relationships” (Primary Neptune / Secondary Moon). The “empathy, / emotional resonance, and sensitivity” (Neptune / Moon) symbolized by this planetary pairing were combined with an “intellectual talent and skill for writing” (Tertiary Mercury). Mercury rises directly over Dublin, joining Primary Neptune and Secondary Moon in a highly charged midpoint-field formed by all three key Transcendentals.
