Vanessa was essentially terribly serious ... In all the time I knew her, Vanessa’s car was functional, and her clothes functional as well. They needed to be. She would work twenty-four hours a day if she could. The work ethic ruled her life.
–Deirdre Redgrave, Vanessa’s sister, from her book, To Be A Redgrave.I pointed out to Vanessa the examples of ... Edith Evans, Margaret Leighton, and other tall women who had built fine stage careers in spite of their inches. I encouraged her to stand up straight. “Be severe, demanding, a person of taste. That leads to success in our work. No young actress could have taken Berhardt’s injunction more seriously.
–Vanessa’s father, Michael Redgrave, from his autobiography, In My Mind’s Eye.
Vanessa RedgraveVanessa Redgrave was born in London, just east of her Secondary Uranus, which runs vertically along the western coast of England in a Transcendental Midheaven position. She achieved theatrical and cinematic “success” (Primary Saturn) in various roles throughout her life–such as her Oscar-winning performance in Julia (1977)–but she is perhaps best remembered for aligning herself with causes considered “radical” or politically “innovative” (Secondary Uranus; one of her aphorisms was, “America is gangsterism for the private profit of the few”) and for the “severe, authoritarian manner” (Primary Saturn) that she used to communicate the “seriousness” (Saturn) of such causes. “Assuming a grave sense of social responsibility” (Primary Saturn), she became involved in antiapartheid and antinuclear causes and ran as a candidate of the Workers’ Revolutionary Party, in the 1974 and 1979 general elections in England. She is also remembered for her role in promoting the rights of the Palestinians. As we can see in her astrocartography, Primary Saturn sets over the Middle East, just east of the Palestinian homeland.
